Part 2. Seeing if tumblr will let me post two audio posts in one day!

I like to imagine that I’m inviting friends and family from far away to my living room for a couple minutes every time I make one of these posts. And you can hear my housemates bustling about the kitchen in the background…

Last night at home with all the roommates in my new place. Maggie and Mel were dancing to the music, and Nicole was knitting.  What I didn’t realize while I was playing (because I was in the other room!) was that Maggie was dancing to the notes I was playing, and Mel was doing some sort of jerky improv to the squeaks of the damper pedal! Hah! I’m going to go oil that thing soon – it’s kind of distracting 🙂

This past weekend, I was out on Whidbey Island, off the coast of Washington State, for my Grandad’s memorial service. I live in the Boston area, and I have rarely gotten out to this place in my lifetime. My brother and I flew out there together with our mom, and we spent a couple days on the island. The woods were so incredibly lush and green!

We had the memorial service at the Senior Center where Grandad had spent a lot of time. As people were starting to trickle in, someone expressed their disappointment that my mom hadn’t brought her violin to play. Very shortly thereafter, someone suggested that I try my hand at the upright piano that was sitting in the front of the room.  This is the first music I played. Sometimes my partner asks me if what I’m playing is “right now.” Almost always, if it is improvised, then the answer is yes, and this music was no exception.

Here’s one that I recorded for my mother last year for Mother’s Day. In the wake of everything that has happened in Boston, I wanted to share a little love. One of my friends recorded a video of her garden this morning, to send to her friends in Boston who couldn’t go outside, and I want to share this in the same vein. Love in the face of chaos and violence and fear.
