Piano Log

from 11/24/11

This is the piano at the house of my cousins Robyn and Phyllis. Nicole and I were staying there for Thanksgiving break, and they had an upright piano that has been in the family for years – I’m sure it was more than 50 years old – possibly over 100. I sat down after dinner to play, and, memorably, Phyllis’s mom also sang through some old-time popular songs with me. Unfortunately, we didn’t record that, but it was a really wonderful evening.

I thought I would start a project and see where it would lead!  I’m going to record myself improvising on different pianos.  This particular piano was an old, very moldy baby grand, in a room off the lobby of the Thornewood Inn in Great Barrington, MA.  I couldn’t play  long, because my sinuses got very irritated, but I was intrigued with the sonorities of the out-of-tune strings.  The setting definitely influences the music I make, and I’m curious to see how these recordings will vary.
