At the home piano…

A sadly truncated post. I tried to record this one directly into tumblr on my phone, and the app cut me off after one minute! To come: a guest collaboration with my brother after we watched the Alloy Orchestra perform to “Man with a Movie Camera” at Wellesley College. I should have this up by the end of the week! Stay tuned…

This is a recording I made from my home keyboard. I’ll be making these whenever I can’t find other pianos to try out!
I’m trying to recover from a repetitive stress injury to my right hand, and I have felt very cautious about playing too much. This post is definitely on the slower, more contemplative side.

This is the piano at the house of my cousins Robyn and Phyllis. Nicole and I were staying there for Thanksgiving break, and they had an upright piano that has been in the family for years – I’m sure it was more than 50 years old – possibly over 100. I sat down after dinner to play, and, memorably, Phyllis’s mom also sang through some old-time popular songs with me. Unfortunately, we didn’t record that, but it was a really wonderful evening.

I thought I would start a project and see where it would lead! I’m going to record myself improvising on different pianos. This particular piano was an old, very moldy baby grand, in a room off the lobby of the Thornewood Inn in Great Barrington, MA. I couldn’t play long, because my sinuses got very irritated, but I was intrigued with the sonorities of the out-of-tune strings. The setting definitely influences the music I make, and I’m curious to see how these recordings will vary.
